Malmö as it should be

The Left Party is on your side. On the side of renters, students, asylum-seekers. We’re for a green transition, investment in welfare, and giving power back to the people. We want to build a Malmö that sticks together, and where everybody can afford to live. In other words, a Malmö as it should be!

🏘️ Cheaper housing

Lower housing costs. More greenery. Space for the whole family. This is how Malmö could be! But new housing in Malmö right now is too expensive. The rent is raised every year, families are evicted, and the young can’t move out. We refuse to let markets dictate who can afford to live in Malmö. We are going to freeze the rent and build more, cheaper rental apartments with clean energy. We also want to create child-friendly, green neighbourhoods.

The Left Party will:

✏️ Good schools

Teachers in our schools are suffering, and many schoolchildren don’t get the help they need. It shouldn’t be like this. Our children are the nurses, climate heroes and engineers of the future – we must invest in them! The Left Party will reduce class sizes, employ more teachers, and give more support to schoolchildren who need it the most. Everyone should live near a close school, no matter which part of Malmö you live in.

🧑🏼‍🚒 More, better jobs

Sky-high unemployment, bad working conditions and low wages. We can change this. We are going to invest in and create jobs in the welfare system. We’ll also raise the lowest wages so that everybody has a little more over every month. We’ll create meaningful jobs in the green transition, to ensure that nobody is left behind. But life isn’t only about work! We also work to be free. That’s why we will shorten working hours – so that you get more time for your family, hobbies and life.

The Left Party will:

Profile issues

🚃 Free public transport

We’ll make public transport cheaper, so that it’s easier to take the train or bus instead of the car. Our investments in the railways will ensure that trains are punctual. Our national Sweden Ticket will make it cheap and easy to travel sustainably around the country! And of course, in the long run, we want to make public transport in Malmö free.

🌳 Green transition

We’ll invest in renewable energy and increased local electricity production in Malmö – all to stop emitting from fossil fuels. We’ll make our city more sustainable and pleasant with solar panels on public buildings and more greenery. We’ll create child-friendly, green streets where people and the environment take priority over unnecessary traffic.

⛑️ Accessible healthcare

Healthcare should always be needs-based and never driven by profit. We want free dental care, improved women’s healthcare, and a greater psychiatric care with shorter waiting times. We’ll give more resources to local health centres to ensure that everyone gets equal and accessible healthcare.

🌏 Humane immigration & asylum

We want humane immigration and asylum based on solidarity – where refugees get the protection they have the right to. Permanent residency should be the norm, and the current government’s deportations must stop. Malmö has been, and will continue to be, a sanctuary of hope for compassion and safety.

❤️ International solidarity

We stand for international solidarity. We are against occupation and imperialist wars supported by the right’s weapon exports and militarisation. The right of all countries to self-determination must be respected, and partnerships with unethical states must be ended. Malmö municipality’s public procurement should not deal with companies or states that commit war crimes or go against humane rights. 

🚩 Democracy & equality

We will raise your pension and improve care for the elderly and disabled. Our democracy will be reinforced with greater transparency and more opportunities for participation in decision-making. The Left Party is ready to stand up for an equal society free from discrimination, inequality and structural racism.

⚽️ Better leisure

All the people of Malmö should have be offered a rich palette of free activities, active community life and open meeting spaces. Libraries should be open longer and close to everyone. We will make civil society more robust with more places for the community to meet freely and safely.

🥕 Affordable daily life

Everybody should be able to afford to live! We want to make people’s daily life cheaper by reducing overinflated prices and reinforcing household finances. Nobody should lose sleep over their rent or risk being evicted. By taxing the very richest in society, we will be able to invest in the welfare system and put people’s needs before the markets’.

🎭 Thriving culture

Culture is a natural part of the welfare system and should be both accessible and free for all. We are going to increase support for free culture, expand libraries and invest in cultural schools. Thriving culture contributes to a feeling of community, creativity, and social development.

🏳️‍🌈 Queer Malmö

Malmö should be a safe and inclusive city for HBTQIA+ people. We want to start a HBTQIA+ committee, give Pride long-term, stable financing, and make transcare free and accessible for all. Everybody in Malmö has the right to be exactly as they wish.
